| Title: | Interior View of DSNY's New CFC Van |
| Keywords: | On the Job, work Building/Facility - garage waste disposal CFC removal |
| Issue Date: | 15-Oct-2007 |
| Abstract: | A digital image from the DSNY's 2006 Annual Report. Interior view of new
CFC van. |
| Description: | Some information about this van can be found on the 2006 DSNY annual
report: "As part of a program to reduce the atmospheric release of
Freon, Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases are collected from appliances,
such as refrigerators and air conditioners. The Department has a fleet
of CFC vans, which collect CFC gases for recycling. The CFC vans utilize
a power inverter to power a pump that transfers the gases from the
appliance to a holding tank on the vehicle. These specialized vehicles
are not commercially available; they were designed and built as a joint
venture through the efforts of BME, BBM and BCC. A call placed to the
City’s 311 information line initiates the dispatch of a CFC van,
which must purge the appliance’s gases before they will be picked
up. More than 140,000 such appointments are completed annually."
