Pretrial Risk Assessment Tools, 2019

Authors: Data Services, Bobst Library
Keywords: Crime and race--United States
Description: This point shapefile represents states and counties that are embedding pretrial risk assessments into pretrial decision-making across the United States. Pretrial risk assessments are decision-making algorithms that use information about a person accused of a crime to try to predict the likelihood of certain outcomes if they are released from jail before their trial. This shapefile shows on the county level, how some states handle risk assessments and the prediction levels of outcomes based on sentencing times. The creation of this map further explains the level of bias and predetermined nature of the United States justice system that contributes to the further oppression of Black Americans. This shapefile was converted from a csv, locations were geocoded by Data Services staff using the Google API. For further explanation on pretrial risk assessment refer to the documentation https://pretrialrisk.com/.
