Description: Rio de Janeiro, 1894. Albumen 21 x 27 cm. Festivities in occasion of the inauguration of a statue of General Osorio, the Brazilian head-of-command during the Paraguayan war, who had died in 1879. In 1887, a popular subscription was held in order to raise funds for the monument, which was commissioned to the sculptor Rodolfo Bernardelli. Bernardelli instantly moved to Paris in order to purchase stone, and worked on the statue for several years. The pedestal was made of marble from Osorio's native state of Rio Grande do Sul, above a small crypt where the general's remains were deposited. The inauguration was celebrated in the presence of president-dictator Marshal Floriano Peixoto and members of his government and the army's general command. A delegation from Uruguay also attended the celebrations. [Illustration taken from George Ermakoff, 'Juan Gutiérrez: Imagens do Rio 1892-1896'. Rio de Janeiro: Capivara, 2001]
