dc.description.abstractThis paper presents a theory for the design of informal STEM spaces, aimed particularly at nurturing STEM engagement, creativity, play, and penalty-free ideation among Black boys. It introduces a framework for the intentional creation of open learning STEM environments that enrich Black boys’ experiences within STEM disciplines through cultural STEM mapping. The ILLEST Lab serves as key evidence of effective design implementation, aligning student interests with technical skill enhancement and a sense of belonging in STEM.
