Abstract: Perlina (Indiana University) has written a thorough analysis of Freidenberg's (d.1955) life and thought. A cousin of Boris Pasternak (their correspondence is one of the book's sources), Freidenberg wrote on aesthetics and the archetypal symbols underlying the world and human community and action. These concepts, their roots in contemporary Russian thought, and their reception are some of the topics discussed here. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
