Cachoeira de Paulo Afonso

Authors: Stahl, Alfonso
Date: 1860
Type: Fotografías
Description: Pernambuco, 1860. Albumen 25.8 x 55.6 cm. [Large-scale landscape panorama composed of two photographs, which Stahl dedicated to the Emperor Pedro II. One of the first photographic landscapes on paper (rather than using the more familiar daguerrotype), in the making of this images the slightly lighter machinery permitted the photographer to approach his subject more closely, yet it also required quick and skillful handling of the wet negatives. Stahl had asked a young black local to pose for him on the rock closest to the waterfall -an extremely dangerous stunt- to give an idea of proportion. The image was plagiated in 1868 by Augusto Riedel in his album recording the Duke of Saxony's journey across Brazil, inserting the figure of a white leisure traveller contemplating the falls instead of Stahl's young black. / Illustrations taken from Bla Corrêa do Lago, 'Augusto Stahl, obra completa em Pernambuco e Rio de Janeiro', Rio de Janeiro: Capivara, 2001]
