dc.description"In many cities where the public transport system still operates to some degree, private contractors have been engaged by the state to operate the buses. The state’s withdrawal from public transport erodes the confidence of women who also happen to be captive users of these modes. Also, given the inefficiency and inadequacy of the public transport system, women are forced to spend a lot of time waiting at the bus stops. Shared auto-rickshaws and other IPT modes are also highly unregulated and operate at will. Together, these factors increase women’s exposure to conditions favorable for stalking, eve-teasing, and other forms of harassment. This study on women’s safety in transport is based on Guwahati"en
